One Room Challenge: Week 6 – Airy & Colorful Shared Bedroom
Here we are. The final week of the One Room Challenge. Am I the only one or have the last 6 weeks absolutely flown by?
I can say that I’m certainly pleased with the progress I have made in this room. Just take a look at the before… It was the perfect example of a horrible use of space. It lacked adequate storage for all the kids’ things, and much of the old furniture was beginning to fall apart.
Aside from my daughter’s birthday wish for a bunk bed, this challenge is really what I needed to get a move on. It all actually started with the bed. A bunk bed was a better use of space, but those ladders certainly make me nervous. We found this one made of solid wood with an actually staircase built right in – with storage(!). This was the perfect solution. However, the added staircase meant it would take up a considerable footprint in the room. Because I knew this gargantuan piece of furniture would be making its way here, I had to decide how to best utilize the floor space.
Though I don’t always recommend this, the best layout was really to have all of the furniture pushed to the perimeter of the room so the kids can actually have some place space. A desk/work area was also a must, along with ample book, toy, and clothes storage. With all those changes made, here we are today…
What we’ve done to this space in the past 6 weeks:
- Removed the old, stained carpet
- Restored the hardwood floors
- Painted the walls and ceiling to create an airier space
- Created a reading nook with acrylic book shelves
- Created a work space that functions best for this small room
- Added a new ceiling fan, bunk bed, dresser, and area rug
- Added decorative items and art to make the space much more personal
I’m quite pleased with the transformation and am so glad to have a finished space in this house! Well, mostly finished…I still need to paint the eyesore of a door (unpictured), hang the airplane, paint the radiator, and change out the window treatments. I also want to add more sentimental and personalized items to the gallery wall as the kids get older.
I’m happy to say they love the space, and so do I. Be sure to check out the other participants’ reveals here.

Great job! I think the bunk bed with the staircase and added storage is awesome! Plus the restored hardwood is a definite improvement. I would love to continue hardwood floors throughout our house into the bedrooms.
We are expecting baby girl #2 in August and eventually have plans for our two girls to share a room. That being said, I enjoy seeing how other people lay out shared bedrooms for their children.
Thanks for stopping by Melissa! I think shared bedrooms really are great for kids. Even though my sister & I are 5 years apart, sharing a room really did help us create such a close bond, even into adulthood. Congrats on baby #2!
Great space! Love what you did:)
Thanks Sabrina!
What a sweet space for your kiddos to share! I love the built in drawers on the bunk stairs! Great job 🙂
Thanks Denise! Those drawers are truly a life saver.
Congrats on all that you accomplished! I am sure your kiddos are going to really enjoy the new space you’ve created for them!
