One Room Challenge: Week 4 – Airy & Colorful Shared Bedroom

The bookshelves have been added to the room and they are, by far, my favorite element in the space! Displaying the books like this adds a colorful element, like artwork , but this is much more functional. I like to encourage the kids to read, so having the books in full view reminds them to pull one out and page through it from time to time. Now, each night when I go in their room to straighten up, I’m noticing one or two books on the floor or tucked into their beds. Before, when the books were in the cubbies (pictured below), they would not take them out too often. I think sifting through them was a bit daunting or just downright boring. Now, the covers seem to entice them and make them more interested in choosing the perfect book.
Before
These shelves hold much more than I thought they would. I just knew I’d have to put some of these in storage (with the million or so books already down in the basement) but all of them fit nicely on the shelves. There’s even room to add more!
My plan for the rest of this wall is to add a slim console table to be used as a desk. We have an old one from Ikea, which I cannot locate on their website, but all I need to do is remove the lower shelf and backing so it can be placed over the radiator. I also was able to pick up a cute kids computer chair from the thrift store a few weeks ago for $6. My daughter has already claimed it as hers, but now my 2-year old wants one of his own. Luckily, I was able to source them at a decent price, so he may just get his wish. I plan to paint the desk a punchy coral color by Behr called Juicy Passionfruit. I happen to have a quart already in my paint stash. (Don’t ask…my paint stash is almost as big as my fabric stash.) It goes perfectly with the color scheme of the room.
I’m really excited to get the desk area styled and add artwork & decorative items to the room! Check out what the other participants have been up to this past week: One Room Challenge – Week 4.

I think the color is pretty amazing, too. Thanks for stopping by Celine!
I love the shelves! I just installed two in my son’s room and I totally agree with you that the books have suddenly become more enticing. Looking forward to seeing the paint—that’s a lovely color for a girl’s room!
Thanks Jennifer! My daughter & son will actually be sharing this room so I’m hoping the desk isn’t too “pink”. But I just love the color, so I’m willing to take the risk!
