One Room Challenge: Week 1 – Airy & Colorful Shared Bedroom
I’m taking the plunge! I’ve made a commitment to ‘attempt’ to finish one space in my home within a 6 week period. Crazy? Maybe, but I’m sure this is the kick in the pants I need to get stuff done around here. It’s called the One Room Challenge, and it’s hosted semi-annually by Linda of Calling It Home.
Though I have a host of unfinished rooms to choose from, like the kitchen, master bedroom, main bathroom, living room, etc., I’ve decided to focus on my kids’ shared bedroom. They certainly deserve a cool, comfy room to call their own.
To give you a little history on this room, I started decorating it as a pink princess room about 3 years ago. I made a custom headboard, sewed a bedskirt & pillows, and gave the room a coordinating paint job….Then, 2 months into it, I found out I was pregnant and put the whole plan on hold since I knew my little princess would have to share her room with either her new little brother or little sister. If I had a girl, I could just continue with my original design plan, but as you might have guessed, we had a bouncing baby boy! The pink princess plan was scrapped and I’ve barely touched the room since.
That’s all changing now! My plan is to create a colorful, gender neutral space that the two of them can comfortably share for the next 5 years or so. I envision a bright, airy space filled with colorful artwork, books and toys.
Here’s the gameplan:
- Paint the walls an icy blue & paint the ceiling
- Remove the carpet
- Restore the hardwood floors
- Add a comfy area rug
- Camouflage that unused door in the corner
- Add bunk bed to the room
- Improve toy storage
- Add space for book storage
- Replace or upgrade the ceiling fan
- Create a desk area for two
- Add a larger dresser to the room for more clothes storage
Here are a few inspiration images that I’m using to guide this design…
I’ll be sure to put together a full mood board by next week’s post. I also hope to have the room painted and the carpet removed by then, too. Wish me luck!
Check back in soon, and check out the others who have linked up to the challenge.
How fun! I LOVE your inspiration photos and can’t wait to see how this will turn out! Good luck!
Thanks for stopping by Kate! I’m really excited to get started. I’m sure you’ll do great on your teen room makeover, too. We have a lot ahead of us over the next 6 weeks….
Hi Kim, it’s nice to meet you. I love shared rooms and your inspiration is perfect. Wow, you are planning a lot of work over the next six weeks. Good luck and thanks for joining.
Thanks for stopping by Linda, & thanks for hosting! I’m really excited to join along this year. I’ll need all the luck I can get!
I have a son & a daughter so I’m excited to follow along and see what you do! 🙂
I love your inspirations, I can’t wait to see what you do!
Shared boy/girl rooms are a huge challenge but I love the path that you’re headed down. And based on the amazing headboard that you made a few years back, I know you’re going to knock it out of the park!
Love your inspiration and colors! Coral and blue are my signature colors! Oh, the wood work on the walls in that one photo is what I’ve been dreaming for my room and girl’s one day! Good luck from ORC gal to another!
I love your taste! Our son and daughter shared a room for a while. I never did it up properly though–I was just about to when our renter gave notice and we decided to put each kid in his/her own room. This will be fun to watch!
