{Loving} Persian Rugs
I’ve had a longstanding affinity for Persian rugs for as long as I can remember. I know they’re not everyone’s cup of tea and, oftentimes, can look way too traditional, but I seriously feel that every room can benefit from the perfect Persian rug, no matter the design style. For a long time, I’ve been mostly enamored with the brightly colored options, but lately, as my tastes are evolving and as I’ve been keeping my eyes peeled for the perfect one for our living room, the more subdued tones are catching my eye.
Take a look at these beauties…
Even the overdyed options are pretty awesome…
I’m not at all an expert on the subject, but here are a few tips to ensure you’re getting the real deal.
1) True Persian rugs are only made in Iran. Rugs made in other middle eastern countries should be more appropriately termed as Oriental rugs.
2) Hand loomed rugs will not have perfectly uniform grids on the underside of the rug. Also, the design will show through to the back and there will not be any kind of mesh or backing on the rug.
3) Authentic rugs are typically not made of synthetic materials – acrylic,
4) The patterns on Persian rugs are typically always symmetrical, but imperfections may be found considering they are handmade.
My dream rug for my living room would be an antique (with light wear) in a dusty salmon color with hits of blues, greens, and creams throughout. Unfortunately, I’ve yet to come across any that are under $3.000 (WAH!), but I have seen some great prices on other color rugs on ebay and esalerugs.com. Speaking of great prices, I spotted a 9’ x 13’ brightly colored stunner at my local thrift store for $70! I’m almost certain it wasn’t authentic, but it was still such a steal for some lucky person. I’m also on the lookout for a long (>12’) runner for my hallway, and I’m holding out hope that the PERFECT rug will (soon) find it’s way to me at a great price!
You’re back! 🙂 So I’m sure the rugs on rugsusa.com are not authentic Persian rugs, but they have insane sales (like, 70% off) around Memorial Day and the 4th of July – might be worth checking out for your runner at least!
And I’m with you – I love those Persian rugs!
I’m back!!! Yeah, I should check them out. Their sales are always great. I actually bought my living room rug there & have no complaints at all.
