Quick & Easy High Contrast Update

Remember, the week before last when I mentioned a small, impromptu project I started? In analyzing my dining room and the many areas that still need tweaks and updates, I realized the built-ins there needed more work. Something was a bit…off. After thinking about it for a while, I realized the problem I had with them stemmed from not being able to really see what’s on the shelves. There was white china, crystal frames, and other white items all on a light gray background. So with the doors closed, it was hard to make out what was really in there. I decided they needed a high contrast update.

Here’s a (not very good) before picture, but you can see what I mean about the things behind the glass sort of blending in with the background.

The paint color was Dolphin Fin by Behr.

I used the Witching Hour paint (by Benjamin Moore) to provide a darker background, which helped immensely t

o make our things in there stand out.  (Seeing these pictures makes me want to paint the shelves in the darker color too.)

And now, this gives me great inspiration for the color palette of my dining room redesign.

It took me less than an hour total (not including drying time between coats) to slap on two quick coats. The paint is great quality and fully covered the lighter color without needing tinted primer.

I’m loving this little tweak!

By the way, I’m pretty much sold on using this color on my lower kitchen cabinets.  Even though I thought there would be an issue with the lack of natural light, the color still looks amazing under artificial light. It’s still the great, deep charcoal navy color I’m after.
